Balcony People

Balcony People
Balcony People – Missouri River Summer of 2017

Balcony People

The faces of the Women who have shared

My journey as I’ve struggled to survive;

The twists and turns so carefully prepared,

To keep my focus fixed—fully alive

To ev’ry sight and sound the smiles and tears

The words they’ve whispered when I’ve given in

To darkness and despair, my doubts and fears

When self-protection tempts me to begin

To turn away in stubbornness and shame

To listen to the voices reinforce

The lies I learned before I knew the name

Of one who set me on another course

Now I look up to what I hear and see

When I look up into my balcony.
